History of Theatre
Historically, the history of Theatre in Mali is closely linked to that of our society as it evolves. The theater has always been a part of lifestyle and expression of our peoples through time: popular theatre "Kotèba, puppetry, farce" N'Togofa "are notable elements of traditional theatre.
The colonial conquest in the nineteenth century did not take because of the vitality of this form of expression, although often, it will be served to his ideology and his policy of economic and cultural domination.
In Mali (former french Sudan), as in other French colonies in the region, the Ecole Normale William Ponty has been the starting point for a French Theatre, likened the techniques of Western European theatre. However, William Ponty will also contribute to the birth of a genuine African theater (West Africa) rooted in African values and open to the world. The years 1950 will be a decisive period in the struggle of the African peoples for the emancipation of colonialism. They were marked by a cultural vitality which reflected the awakening of national consciousness among young intellectuals who will form the vanguard of the struggle for independence.
No cultural field, better than the theater, has worked at the time, to encourage the momentum nationalist, Africa and Mali in particular.
During the early years of independence, the political authorities of Mali strengthen the capacity of this irreplaceable instrument for carrying out the policy of national reconstruction.
The Theatre of Mali had conquered his lustre. Weeks artistic and sports were held each year, where national concerns at the time were treated without complacency by artists in numbers of songs, dances and dramatic theatre among others.
Historical Themes: Rehabilitation national heroes that colonization was attempting to discredit in the eyes of our peoples. Exaltation of patriotic feelings.
- Policy issues: Fighting cultural alienation and all kinds of social injustices, flaws of colonialism. Fighting Corruption in the new leaders. Fight against fraud.
Social Issues: Critique of morals (political, moral), a tribute to the work, solidarity and unity.
It should be noted that in parallel with these trends, traditional theatre has also been secularized.
Towards the 1970, the change of political regime would liberalize the arts in general in Mali.
The Biennial Artistic and Cultural succeeded to the Cultural Weeks, but retained the essence thematic, until the advent of democracy in March 1991, which ended completely free theatre and the creative (freedom of expression and freedom of 'initiative).
